This story of Gertrude van Tijn was first published in Dutch in 2013. At the time, either the publishers, Nieuw Amsterdam Uitgevers, or the author chose to entitle the book Gertrude van Tijn and the Fate of the Dutch Jews. Though applicable and descriptive, the title alone made the book appear quite boring and not challenging. By contrast, the decision to amend the book’s title for publication in the English-speaking world suggests a greater assertiveness. Moreover, “the ambiguity of virtue” gets right to the point, for this is very much what is revealed by the book. In this work Bernard Wasserstein carefully reconstructs the biography of van Tijn, with special attention paid to the time of the German occupation of the Netherlands from 1940 to 1945 and the persecution of the Dutch Jews.
